There are three types of cutting needles:

STEEL
The two limitations of steel cutters are shorter life and higher surface noise. The life of a steel cutting needle is approximately 15 to 30 minutes of recording time.

STELLITE
These are a more professional type of cutting needle, capable of cutting shinier, quieter grooves than the steel needle. Their recording life is upward of 2 hours at 78 RPM.

SAPPHIRE
These will cut silent grooves in a professional manner. These will record upward of 7 hours at 78 RPM.
